Nerissa believes in using a client-centered approach to therapy, which she allows the client to develop goals and determine the direction of each session with her guidance. She believes in having a strong relationship with each client by quickly building rapport. Nerissa has a love for the community and strives toward breaking the stigma around mental health in African Americans, as well as other cultures in which therapy is taboo! She also specializes in helping those who suffer from trauma, PTSD, depression, and grief and loss, as well as individuals and families being affected by addiction. Nerissa also has a strong passion for working with military spouses and families, young adults, and adolescents who are having trouble with low self-esteem, body image, depression, and more.
Nerissa has adopted an eclectic approach to therapy and uses many techniques from many several different modalities. She combines talk therapy with emotional regulation techniques such as guided meditation and breathing exercises, psycho education, and various assignments that may be given to promote the use of tools in clients’ day-to-day life that are learned during sessions. Nerissa is committed to treating each client with respect and without judgment.
